AGRICOLA

Descriptions: AGRICOLA (AGRICultural OnLine Access) is a catalog and index to the collections of the National Agricultural Library (NAL), and is a primary public source of global agricultural information. Covers all formats and periods, including printed works dating to the 15th century. Records describe resources for agriculture and its allied disciplines: animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, even earth and environmental sciences. AGRICOLA does not contain the full text of the materials cited, but thousands of its records are linked to full text.  Click Help for information on Requesting Materials. AGRICOLA is organized into two bibliographic data sets. The NAL OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) contains citations to materials in the Library's collection, and some for items not held by NAL. The Article Citation Database includes many citations with abstracts, to articles (see Journals Indexed in AGRICOLA), book chapters, reports and reprints. Each data set can be searched separately, or the two can be searched together.

Descriptions: America: History and Life is the definitive index of literature covering the history and culture of the United States and Canada, from prehistory to the present. Indexing for 1,700 journals is included, from as far back as 1910. The database includes citations and links to book and media reviews. Strong English-language journal coverage and English abstracts of articles published in more than 40 other languages. Historical Abstracts covers the history of the world excluding the United States and Canada from 1450 to the present. It provides indexing of more than 2,300 academic historical journals in over 40 languages, going back to 1955.

Descriptions: The Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP) is the finding tool for electronic and print publications from all three branches of the federal government. It contains descriptive records for historical and current publications, and provides direct links to those available online.   All records generated since July 1976 are included, and the CGP is updated daily. Eventually the catalog will include records for publications dating back to the late 1800s, making it the central point for locating both new and historical Government publications. Until then, for publications issued before 1976, a printed Monthly Catalog of U. S. Government Publications, should be consulted. This publication, CGP's predecessor, is available at any Federal Depository Library. To locate the depository nearest you, use GPO's Locate Libraries service at: http://catalog.gpo.gov/fdlpdir/public.jsp .   The CGP provides Basic, Advanced, and Expert search options. Searches can be narrowed to specific collections or formats, such as maps, Congressional, or Internet publications. Search results or selected records can be e-mailed.

Descriptions: This European Patent Office (EPO) database actually covers records of patents worldwide, drawing its information also from WIPO (the World Intellectual Property Organization.) Unlike most patent databases, this one is very user-friendly, offering searches without the use of field tags. Search by keyword, author or organization; publication, application, priority or reference number; or search by EPO classification, which is based on the International Patent Classification system. The advanced search offers inclusive searching or limiting to WIPO or EPO databases, and entry of up to ten specifics, including keyword. Relevant help information is offered in each screen. The Patent Information Tour offers short visual tutorials, and patent abstracts can be translated into many languages using a drop-down menu.

Descriptions: Newspaper Source covers a number of major national (US) and international newspapers, including The Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, The Washington Post, The Times (UK), Toronto Star, etc. Coverage varies widely for well-known newspapers; for instance, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal submit only bibliographic records, and for some papers with full text, there are embargoes ranging from one month to years. This database also contains selected full text for a great many regional American newspapers: Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press, Miami Herald, New York Daily News, and many lesser-known titles.
