Genomic Data Commons Data Portal

Descriptions: From the National Cancer Institute, the Genomic Data Commons, or GDC, is a new, open-access cancer database, launched containing the raw genomic and clinical data of approximately 12,800 patients. Researchers are encouraged to submit their own data to the resource, which contains information on treatments used and the response to those treatments. The goal is to accelerate research by sharing a large pool of re-analyzable data. (Some data is protected.) Click on Analytical Tools to view details on how to access and submit data, and see the Data section for an overview of the content with user-friendly graphical details and filtering options.

Descriptions: This French company provides very good interactive online anatomy and imaging modules and case examples, some of which are freely available. Notably, a multi-unit online course on MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) physics is fully open-access. Intended for radiology residents, radiologists, MRI techs, medical physicists and students, its content includes interactive animations, experiments and quizzes designed to add fun while learning MRI physics. For individuals, a modest annual subscription fee affords full access to all materials. Mobile and iPad applications are available.

PsychiatryOnline™ (POL) offers access to American Psychiatric Association textbooks, journals, patient guides and professional development tools. It provides psychiatrists and mental health professionals with key resources for diagnosis, treatment, and research. PsychiatryOnline™ contains the DSM Library, comprised of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed. (DSM 5®) and its accompanying handbooks and clinical cases; APA's Practice Guidelines; four APA journals (excluding FOCUS) with access to their historical issues; and a list of e-books, to which new titles are added periodically. Under the "International" tab, the Spanish-language edition of American Journal of Psychiatry is available. As a bonus, each month a free, downloadable book is posted.

Whole Brain Atlas

Descriptions: This atlas is a neuroimaging educational tool, showing trans-axial, saggital and coronal views of the brain in cross-sectional MRI, CT and nuclear imaging techniques, with side-by-side navigation. Image series are provided for the normal brain and for its disease states: cardiovascular, neoplastic, degenerative and inflammatory/infectious. In disease states, clicking a link reading "clinical" will bring the user to a page of text explaining the case being viewed. The "Top 100 Brain Structures" feature is a study tool allowing the user to view structures individually, or to view a group of brain structures marked with pointers, labelled or unlabelled. The site is co-sponsored by the Departments of Radiology and Neurology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, its Countway Library of Medicine and the American Academy of Neurology.
