Descriptions: A project team from Emory University wrote this discussion paper and created the consumer guide it links to-- a guide to getting insured under the Affordable Care Act --  The New Health Care Law and You. Published online on the Institute of Medicine's website, the guide helps people answer four essential questions about the implementation of  "ObamaCare":

  • 1. What are my choices for health insurance?
  • 2. How do I get it?
  • 3. How do I use it?
  • 4. How much will it cost me?
This Guide, though written in Summer 2013,  is a good starting point, providing an easy way to determine one's current status under the new law, on which to then explore options and decide on a course of action.

Descriptions: The NIOSH site is primarily a source of statistics and data gathered from the agency's research and surveillance on workplace safety and hazardous exposure. Under Other Data Resources are data on investigations, hazards, safety products, metrics and tests. The Publications area has many useful reports with links to authoritative outside  sources. A downloadable Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards and a downloadable NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods are also under Publications. From this site, the user can also link to the search box for NIOSHTIC-2,  a bibliographic database of approximately 51,000 articles, grant reports and other documents, the research for which was supported, wholly or in part, by NIOSH.

WISER: Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders

Descriptions: WISER is a first-response system designed to assist in hazardous material incidents. WISER provides substance identification support, human health information, and containment/suppression advice.  Available as a free download, standalone application for PCs and hand-held devices, or access the web version, when available. Features a Chemical Reactivity utility, in which a group of substances can be entered for a particular circumstance, and the user can see, at an overview or a detailed level, the reactions and hazards that would ensue. Also includes a protective distance-mapping feature from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Emergency Response Guidebook.
