Descriptions: This body's primary mission is to educate, accredit and inform its membership- 56 poison control centers throughout the United States and two in Canada- to advance public health care in the regions of all the state poison control centers. For the consumer it provides alerts and general prevention information for parents, babysitters, children and health care providers. It contains information on how to request information from the National Poison Data System, a link to the organization's past annual reports, which are published in the journal Clinical Toxicology, press releases, and a map of poison control center locations.  You can reach your local poison center by calling 1-800-222-1222.

Descriptions: The Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (CGP) is the finding tool for electronic and print publications from all three branches of the federal government. It contains descriptive records for historical and current publications, and provides direct links to those available online.   All records generated since July 1976 are included, and the CGP is updated daily. Eventually the catalog will include records for publications dating back to the late 1800s, making it the central point for locating both new and historical Government publications. Until then, for publications issued before 1976, a printed Monthly Catalog of U. S. Government Publications, should be consulted. This publication, CGP's predecessor, is available at any Federal Depository Library. To locate the depository nearest you, use GPO's Locate Libraries service at: http://catalog.gpo.gov/fdlpdir/public.jsp .   The CGP provides Basic, Advanced, and Expert search options. Searches can be narrowed to specific collections or formats, such as maps, Congressional, or Internet publications. Search results or selected records can be e-mailed.

Descriptions: GHDx is a catalog of the world's health and demographic data. Use the GHDx to research population census data, surveys, registries, indicators and estimates, administrative health data, and financial data related to health. The provider, the IHME, is an educational and research public health organization, and provides fellowships at the bachelor's and graduate levels. IHME publishes the BioMed Central journal, Population Health Metrics, and various open-access reports. There are many interesting resources here. Descriptions: KEGG is a resource purposed to facilitate understanding of the functions and utilities of the biological system--  cells, organisms and ultimately the ecosystem--  based on genomic and molecular-level information. It is a computer representation of the biological system, consisting of the molecular building blocks-- genes, proteins and chemical substances, integrated with molecular wiring diagrams of interaction, reaction and relational networks. Extensive data is available to view; ftp downloading requires a subscription. KEGG was developed in collaboration with the Bioinformatics Center, Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University and the Human Genome Center, Institute of Medical Science, University of Tokyo.

Descriptions: The NCBI Structure Group, a part of the Computational Biology Branch of NCBI, developed this suite of four free molecular and protein databases, each of which is itself made up of several others, and all of which can be searched individually. Macromolecular Structures, Conserved Domains, Small Molecules, and Biological Systems are the four main resources here- tools designed to facilitate discovery of sequence, function and structure associations. The tab labeled "Discover" does a good job of explaining how to use the Structure databases and how to access various facets of information on a molecule or protein from any point in NCBI's many resources.

Texas Digital Sanborn Maps

Descriptions: Covering 1867 - 1970, Sanborn maps are large-scale plans of a city or town, drawn at a scale of 50 feet to an inch. They were created to assist fire insurance companies as they assessed the risk associated with insuring individual properties. Descriptions: This atlas is a neuroimaging educational tool, showing trans-axial, saggital and coronal views of the brain in cross-sectional MRI, CT and nuclear imaging techniques, with side-by-side navigation. Image series are provided for the normal brain and for its disease states: cardiovascular, neoplastic, degenerative and inflammatory/infectious. In disease states, clicking a link reading "clinical" will bring the user to a page of text explaining the case being viewed. The "Top 100 Brain Structures" feature is a study tool allowing the user to view structures individually, or to view a group of brain structures marked with pointers, labelled or unlabelled. The site is co-sponsored by the Departments of Radiology and Neurology at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, its Countway Library of Medicine and the American Academy of Neurology.

Descriptions: WolframAlpha is a computational database/search engine that interprets natural language queries, returning dynamic answers. Although still in development, it currently "...contains 10+ trillion pieces of data, 50,000+ types of algorithms and models, and linguistic capabilities for 1000+ domains." Enter a food item, and the engine generates a page of its nutritional, caloric, vitamin, mineral and physical properties. Input any integer for information about its forms, qualities and expressions. Explore a surname or given name-- view, among other data, its trend in popularity from the 1890's to the present. Input a disease name, and generate a series of graphs illustrating prevalence, average age of onset, sex distribution, medical coverage and more. Use the disease name as a cause of death, and mortality statistics are presented. Apps are now available to download for use with iPhone, iPad and Android.
