Heart Remodeling: Hope for Heart Patients
Texas Heart Institute
Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery

Heart remodeling or reshaping is a procedure pioneered by Dr. Randas Batista in the Brazilian jungles 14 years ago. The Batista Procedure was greeted with skepticism initially by the world medical community. In 1994, doctors from the Cleveland Clinic went to Brazil to observe Batista and his innovative life-saving technique. They came away impressed enough to start a clinical trial back in Cleveland. Since then, leading heart centers throughout the country and several European hospitals are using this procedure. In July, Dr. O.H. Frazier, Texas Heart Institute, performed this operation in the Texas Medical Center, Houston.

Equally interesting is a novel procedure pioneered for Hypertropic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy, a dangerous heart condition that is difficult to diagnose. The procedure was developed by Dr. Ulrich Sigwart, Chief of Invasive Cardiology at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. Doctors inject a small amount of pure alcohol into blood vessels near the heart to remedy symptoms caused by an overgrown muscle between the heart's pumping chambers. In the Texas Medical Center, this experimental treatment was tested in the Methodist Hospital by Dr. William Spencer.

Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery was approved by the American Heart Association Science Advisory and Coordinating Committee in August, 1996.

Some of the minimally invasive procedures performed today are:

1. Port-Access Coronary Artery Bypass (PACAB); PortCAB
2. MIDCAB : Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass.
3. Transmyocardial Revascularization TMR Procedure.

Some advanced surgical techniques in heart surgery available today are:
1. Automatic Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator(AICD): a device which detects life threatening heart arrhythmia.
2. Laser Angioplasty
3. Baloon Angioplasty
4. Radiofrequency Ablation
5. Atherectomy
6. Excimer lasers for clearing artries.
