The following full-text electronic journals are available through the Electronic Biomedical Journals webpage on the Library's web site:
The list of electronic (e-) journal titles is growing daily! Publishers are offering temporary FREE trial access to limited full-text titles with paid print subscriptions. We are taking advantage of these trial offers, and also taking steps to expand our number of paid e-subscriptions based on the needs of our users. Funding and ongoing support of e-journals is a major challenge for the Library. The Library will need to pay for print and non-print e-subscriptions. Because users still want print titles, the budget is stretched. There are also copyright and archiving issues that need to be resolved. In the meantime, the Library is exploring various funding strategies, including consortial arrangements, for cost-effective e-subscriptions. Acquiring and implementing e-subscriptions is a complex process. Over fifty different pricing models have been identified for subscriptions to electronic full-text journals. These models include site license agreements for groups of titles from the same publisher; in other cases, a title-by-title approach is required. Database vendors also provide fee-for-service arrangements. Common modes of access to e-journals include IP address verification and password/PIN. The IP mode is easy, but restricts access to campus IP addresses only. Remote access (from home, work, etc.) requires an additional authorization process. Password/PIN access, while straightforward for individual subscribers, raises site license costs for the Library because we have thousands of users. This is an exciting time in the evolution of health sciences literature. We plan to engage in future pilot testing and will ask users to participate. Questions? Health Reference Center (HRC) is now available from the Library's Home Page. HRC provides bibliographic references, abstracts and fall text for excerpts and articles from a variety of health publications. Material includes a medical dictionary; medical directories and reference books; consumer and professional health periodicals; and pamphlets issued by leading health organizations. The periodical material is augmented by spe6aHy selected health articles from general-interest, business and specialty publications. It is updated weekly, and includes four years of material, plus entries from the current year.
A photo exhibit featuring historical pictures of famed heart surgeon Dr. Michael E. DeBakey will be on display June 14 - July 11 in the Library. The display, in honor of Dr. DeBakey's 50th anniversary at the Baylor College of Medicine showcases various stages in his career as a surgeon, educator and medical statesman. Among the photos are Dr. DeBakey creating the first artificial artery on a sewing machine, meetings with former U. S. Presidents Bush and Reagan, Russian President Yeltsin, and Britain's Duke of Windsor. Also pictured is the 1965 Time magazine with Dr. DeBakey on the cover.
