Consumer Health and Public Health Information was the theme of the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center  (HAM-TMC) Library’s Third Annual Computers in Health Care Conference, held Friday June 18, 1999, in the Sammons Auditorium of the Jesse H. Jones Library Building. Naomi C. Broering, MLS, MA, Program Chairman and Executive Director of the HAM-TMC Library, and J. Robert Beck, MD, Vice President for Information Technology at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and Chairman of the HAM-TMC Library Board, opened the conference and welcomed 232 registered attendees.

Speakers included: Michael Fordis, MD, Director, Center for Collaborative & Interactive Technologies and Associate Dean, Continuing Medical Education , BCM, “Connections for Corporate Wellness and for Patient Education;” Karen E. Johnson, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics-Newborn, BCM and Health Reporter, KHOU-TV Channel 11, “Focus on Health;” William A.Yasnoff, MD, PhD, Associate Director for Sciences, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Public Health Information Services for the 21st Century;” and Roy A. Smith, Vice President for Technology, drkoop.com, “drkoop.com: Fortifiying the Doctor/Patient Relationship by Making the Internet Work for You.”

Two concurrent workshops were offered: “TIF Grant Opportunities: Meet the Experts,” presented by Robert M. Brecht, PhD, Constance D. Baldwin, PhD, and Steven R. Shelton, MBA, PA-C and “NN/LM Workshop: MEDLINEplus & PubMed” presented by Renée Bougard, MLIS, AHIP, Associate Director, NN/LM South Central Region. Both workshops were well attended. A celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Library, box lunches and exhibits followed the program.

Effective September 1, 1999, the HAM – TMC Library will implement a fee for printing at the public-use computers available in the Library. The charge for printing will be 10 cents per page. The debit cards currently used for purchasing photocopies in the Library will also be used for purchasing print copies.

With more full-text journals and textbooks available electronically, demand for laser print copies has increased and the distinction between photocopying and laser printing has become less obvious. Additionally, many clients are utilizing the equipment for personal activities such as e-mail and electronic shopping.

Naomi C. Broering, Executive Director of the HAM-TMC Library, received the Winifred Sewell Award for Innovation in Information Technologies at the Special Libraries Association (SLA) 90th Annual Conference in June 1999. The SLA is an international association with over 21,000 members–information professionals and special librarians. The Winifred Sewell Prize is granted to a member who has shown leadership and innovation in the development and/or use of advanced technologies in the organization or dissemination of biomedical and life sciences information.

The Library hosted a computer class on June 16, 1999 for a “Take Our Children to Work Day” program sponsored by The University of Texas Houston-Health Science Center. Children ages 9-16 had the opportunity to attend a class on Web design. Naomi C. Broering, Executive Director of the HAM-TMC Library, Debbie Todd, Director of Administration of the UT School of Allied Health Sciences (UTSAH), Dr. Kathy Johnson, faculty at UTSAH, and student participants are pictured. 

On Friday March 12, 1999 twenty four students from High Tower High School Medical Sciences Academy, located  in Missouri City, TX, visited the HAM-TMC Library  for an introductory class on library services and resources.

Mrs. I. Singleton, RN Med., accompanied the students, who  are 10th graders interested in pursuing careers in the medical field. High Tower is the newest high school in the Fort Bend Independent School District. There are three academies within the school: Medical Science, Engineering , and Communications.
