Friends of the Library 1999 Dinner — Most Successful Ever On October 27, 1999, Dr. and Mrs. David A.Ott invited some of Houston’s most fascinating people to join the Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library for an evening of conversation and new ideas. Many Houstonians responded to the invitation and joined the Friends at the Houston Country Club for cocktails and dinner. The evening was a celebration of the fifty years the Houston Academy of Medicine–Texas Medical Center Library has served the Houston community. Since 1958, the funds raised by the Friends (over $250,000 in 1999) have been used to support the Library’s biomedical and nursing collections, services to the public and the health care community, or special projects which are not a part of the Library’s budget. Recently the Friends selected two such areas on which to focus their support. One, the Jesse H. Jones Community Health Information Service, allows the Library to reach out into the community, providing information on diseases and health care to the public and joining with public libraries and public health agencies to improve access to health information in Houston. One component of this project is the Texas HealthInfo Website (txhi.library.tmc.edu). A second project being facilitated by the Friends is that of prioritizing and processing special collections relating to the history and development of the Texas Medical Center (see story below) in order to make them available for researchers. Several members of the Friends Board of Directors have been working closely with the staff of the Library’s John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center to solicit new manuscript collections and secure gifts for the historical collections. Many thanks are due the 1999 Dinner Committee, notably Dr. and
Mrs. David Ott, and to all the members of the Friends Board for their
work on the Library’s behalf. Thanks specially to this year’s Most Fascinating
honorees. Researchers in Houston’s medical history and members of the community
seeking health care information will benefit for years to come from the
generosity of the Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library.

Houston Medical History Project The John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center is the only historical repository with a major focus on collecting and preserving documents concerning the history of health care in Houston, Texas. The manuscript collections in the McGovern Center are not just of regional interest; they record the achievements of individuals and institutions that have influenced national health care policy and have been innovators in medical and surgical care. Over the past decade, marvelous collections have been donated to the HAM–TMC Library. These include the personal and professional papers of R. Lee Clark, MD, Sam A. Nixon, MD, Frederick C. Elliott, DDS, Russell J. Blattner, MD, Dr. Ernst Knobil and Joseph L. Melnick, PhD. These collections and hundreds more provide the foundation for all future research on the history of health care in Houston and the development of the Texas Medical Center. The Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library have made a major commitment to this historical project by donating $180,000 to process collections and to provide public access in print and electronic form to the catalogue of collections and to selected documents within them. Two new staff members, a project archivist and a technician, will process collections of personal papers already in the archive, prepare guides to historical collections, and help to index the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners licensure files. Over four hundred titles—newsletters, journals and reports from Texas Medical Center hospitals and schools—will be added to the Library’s online catalog. Beginning with the 1950’s, the early days of the Texas Medical Center, these materials document the stages of institutional development and the generous contributions made by Houstonians to biomedical research and health education. Some of the earliest, most fragile newsletters will be scanned for viewing on the Internet. The Houston Medical History Project outlined above is part of a much larger project, the John P. McGovern Digital History of Medicine Library. To support this digital library, the HAM-TMC Library will fund additional personnel and equipment to provide web access to materials on Texas medical history. For further information please contact Elizabeth White, Director, John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center (Tel. 713-799-7139), or E- mail (bethw@library.tmc.edu). |
