Descriptions: EMBASE is a comprehensive index to peer-reviewed biomedical literature with international scope, covering 1947-present. EMBASE indexes more than 2,700 journals not covered by PubMed/Medline and includes about 300,000 conference abstracts annually from 2009 to the present. EMBASE combines its own ontology, EMTREE, with that of Medline, so that more of the relevant search results are retrieved in a search. EMBASE is an ideal resource for preparing systematic reviews and tracking drug and medical device information. Descriptions: This European Patent Office (EPO) database actually covers records of patents worldwide, drawing its information also from WIPO (the World Intellectual Property Organization.) Unlike most patent databases, this one is very user-friendly, offering searches without the use of field tags. Search by keyword, author or organization; publication, application, priority or reference number; or search by EPO classification, which is based on the International Patent Classification system. The advanced search offers inclusive searching or limiting to WIPO or EPO databases, and entry of up to ten specifics, including keyword. Relevant help information is offered in each screen. The Patent Information Tour offers short visual tutorials, and patent abstracts can be translated into many languages using a drop-down menu.

Medical Product Safety Network (MEDSUN)

The primary goal for MedSun is to work collaboratively with the clinical community to identify, understand, and solve problems with the use of medical devices. Over 350 health care facilities, primarily hospitals, participate in the entire MedSun network." There are MEDSUN sub-networks for various conditions and clinical settings in which medical devices are commonly used: HeartNet, HomeNet, KidNet (neonates), LabNet, SightNet and TissueNet.

FDA Maude Database

Descriptions: MAUDE stands for Manufacturer And User Device Experience. Each year, the FDA receives several hundred thousand medical device reports (MDRs) of suspected device-associated deaths, serious injuries and malfunctions. The FDA uses MDRs to monitor device performance, detect potential device-related safety issues, and contribute to benefit-risk assessments of these products. The MAUDE database houses MDRs submitted to the FDA by mandatory reporters 1 (manufacturers, importers and device user facilities) and voluntary reporters such as health care professionals, patients and consumers. Some information dates back as far as 1991. Updates are posted weekly. Zip file format of Maude data is available for downloading.

Descriptions: Use the prominent links to navigate to various sections of FDA Drugs: Drug Recalls, Drug Shortages, Drug Safety Communications, Medication Errors, and more. Drug Info Rounds contains instructive videos for practicing pharmacists. MedWatch is the safety and adverse event reporting mechanism, and one can sign up for email or RSS feed of MedWatch updates.  This site is somewhat complex, linking to a wealth of information and many different sections within FDA Drugs, but is easy to navigate via the "breadcrumbs" posted at the top, showing the user the path already taken. Tabs along the top lead to sections devoted to other areas of regulation under the FDA's purview, such as cosmetics, food, radiation-emitting products and medical devices.
