Descriptions: HealthCare.gov is a one-stop shop for learning about available health insurance coverage, based on location, state of health, and other criteria. It includes links to healthcare facilities that accept the uninsured-- "self-pay" patients and those who cannot afford to pay. HealthCare.gov is also a place to check for answers to questions about the Affordable Care Act, and to use an interactive timeline detailing the implementation of its most important provisions. Different topics under "Comparing Care Providers" link to the Medicare website, to other sections of this site, or to the DHHS website, where users can learn about physicians or types of healthcare facilities.

Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP)

Descriptions: The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) is a suite of healthcare databases and related software tools developed through a Federal-State-Industry partnership to build a multi-state system of healthcare databases supportive of research and decision-making. HCUP databases contain a core set of clinical and non-clinical information found in a typical patient discharge abstract: listed diagnoses and procedures, status at time of discharge, patient demographics, and charges regardless of payer (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, or uninsured.) The information is translated into a single format to facilitate both multi-state and national-to-state comparisons. HCUP is sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) as part of its mission to improve the quality, safety, efficiency and effectiveness of the U.S. healthcare system.

Better Data, Better Health

A "data hub" provides interactive graphics of state populations broken out by ethnicity, educational attainment, and age group for a number of healthcare measures, such as rates of the uninsured, portion of state budgets spent on healthcare, healthcare quality, and more. The focus of this website is discussion and demonstration of how "big data" can serve to improve health care in the United States.
