Descriptions: Frontiers was launched in 2007 by scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute of  Technology in a grassroots initiative.  Frontiers is an open-access, scholarly, primarily scientific publisher, producing 26 community-driven journals with growing impact factors, and with more than 25,000 high-impact researchers on its editorial boards. Frontiers is notable for a democratic system of peer review, the details of which can be examined under the "About" section. Authors with accepted articles who demonstrably cannot bear the cost of publication can apply to the Frontiers Research Foundation for a grant to waive some or all author fees. Waivers are dependent on the World Bank economic status of the author's country. Many video lectures are posted in a keyword-searchable, subject-browse interface. Read abstracts of about 180 downloadable e-books, which can be purchased for a negligible fee. The Frontiers Community part of the site is home to an image bank, an international conference/events schedule, a blogging platform with numerous active blogs, and a jobs board. Authors, editors and reviewers come from prestigious institutions worldwide, many of them from the Texas Medical Center. To participate in the networking components, Frontiers Research Network and Frontiers Community, complete the free online registration form. Maintain contact and receive alerts via almost any social networking tool or via RSS feed. Many TMC researchers participate.

Descriptions: This is a large collection (approx. 150 titles) of Reference e-Books that can be searched simultaneously as a database, or singly. GVRL offers access to a wide spectrum of disciplines in multi-volume encyclopedias and other reference books, each focusing on an overview or an aspect of arts and humanities, medicine, social and "hard" sciences. These are works published by Gale and other well-known publishers, for instance Wiley, Cambridge University Press and MacMillan. A Merriam-Webster dictionary is also provided.

Descriptions: Stat!Ref is a cross-searchable reference database of core full-text medical, pharmacology and nursing books, drug information from AHFS, evidence-based resources from ACP, and tools like ICD 9 and 10, Calculators, Stedman's and the National Guideline Clearinghouse. This subscription for educational institutions, provided via the Texas State Library, includes the latest editions of more than eighty standard texts and other respected medical and nursing titles. Stat!Ref also provides a customizable Evidence Alerts feed. Create a My STAT!Ref “Preferences” account to receive these alerts at selectable regular intervals. To do this,

  • Access STAT!Ref
  • Go to “Preferences” (located just under the search box)
  • Sign up for preferences
  • Select disciplines and a time interval.
Stat!Ref provides Mobile Access for IPhone, IPad,Blackberry and Android. See http://www.statref.com/products/srMobile.html for details. You can activate mobile access via your "Preferences" account. Once in your individual account, click "Temporary Log-in Account," and follow directions. Please note that for security reasons, your mobile access must be renewed every 90 days. ICD-10:  The Library has a separate subscription to the ICD-10 draft Clinical Modification and Procedure Coding System documents. Stat!Ref could not integrate our individual subscriptions into the larger database platform accessed by all participating libraries statewide, so these two items are best located by using the e-books tab of the A-Z list (just input "icd 10" and these titles will come to the top) or by searching the library catalog for ICD-10. We hope that in mid-2014 the ICD-10 resources will be included in the statewide subscription.

Descriptions: The SCOPUS database contains millions of records from 10,150 life and health sciences publications (including all journals contained in Medline and EmBase) and includes most other sciences and humanities-- coverage of 20,450 journal titles. SCOPUS also indexes the proceedings of 750 conferences.  Searching also pullsl in relevant Web resources, organized under a separate tab. Another tab separates patent results from patent offices in the US and worldwide. SCOPUS provides a Journal Analyzer tool that graphs journals, singly or for comparison, from 1996 to present, showing total citations, number of articles published, total cites divided by number of articles, and the percentage of non-cited articles. Affiliation searching is also provided.
