Established in 1951, the independent, non-profit Joint Commission provides accreditation and certification services for health care facilities– hospitals, nursing homes, laboratories, home health care providers, etc. and in diverse specialties ranging from critical care to behavioral health. The JCAHO “…seeks to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value.” To that end, it produces standards, goals, certifications, awards, quality reports and consumer resources. Standards address levels of performance in areas such as patient rights, patient treatment, medication safety and infection control. JCAHO publishes reviews, white papers, reports including an Annual Report, National Patient Safety Goals, its Journal on Quality and Patient Safety, and numerous newsletters, some of which are freely accessible here.
