Built in 1887, replaced in the 1934 by the Art Deco station that is now incorporated into Minute Maid Park, and demolished in 1960[3].<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/central-depot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1449 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/central-depot.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Central Depot\" width=\"300\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/central-depot.jpg 727w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/central-depot-300x124.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>For many years, Houston advertised itself as \u201cThe City Where 17 Railroads Meet the Sea\u201d to emphasize that it was a modern, technologically progressive city, capable of handling the bounty of crops the state produced. The locomotive was included on the city seal when it was adopted in February, 1840. The city fathers were optimistic: Houston wouldn\u2019t have an operational rail line until 1853. The Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railroad was the first railroad in the state and only the second west of the Mississippi. It was also the earliest branch of today\u2019s Southern Pacific[4].<br \/>\n<strong>Baptist Sanitarium, circa 1917<\/strong>: Resurrecting another blog post (<a href=\"http:\/\/mcgovernhrc.wordpress.com\/2010\/10\/01\/baptist-sanitarium-student-nurses-album-circa-1918\/\">October 1, 2010<\/a>) brings us back to Baptist Sanitarium, before it became Memorial Hospital and then half of Memorial Hermann.\u00a0 An anonymous nursing student[5] kept a photo album in the few years leading up to World War I.\u00a0 The hospital in those days was on an unpaved street, and on a streetcar line.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/baptist-1917.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1450 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/baptist-1917.jpg?w=242\" alt=\"Baptist 1917\" width=\"242\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/baptist-1917.jpg 807w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/baptist-1917-242x300.jpg 242w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/baptist-1917-768x952.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/a><strong>Young men and cars, circa 1917:<\/strong> The back of the album has pictures that seem to be of friends, family, and travel destinations, and finally of Fort Sam Houston during the War.\u00a0 One of the informal pictures is of two young men and their cars.\u00a0 The car on the left is an early 1910&#8217;s Ford[6]:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/cars.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1451 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/cars.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Cars\" width=\"300\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/cars.jpg 2865w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/cars-300x248.jpg 300w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/cars-768x636.jpg 768w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/cars-1024x848.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The second car presented something of a challenge.\u00a0 The quality of the original photo isn&#8217;t great and a lot of the detail was blotted out by intense lighting, awkward photo exposure, and age.\u00a0 The shape of the grille was extremely common in the early- to mid-1910&#8217;s and is of little help, but the high-set headlights, tall radiator cap ornament, and metal &#8220;apron&#8221; below the grille itself are unusual.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/car-ii.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1452 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/car-ii.jpg?w=230\" alt=\"Car II\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/car-ii.jpg 944w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/car-ii-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/car-ii-768x999.jpg 768w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/car-ii-787x1024.jpg 787w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a>A lot of Googling and an email to a car club confirmed that it is a 1912 or 1913 Hupmobile[8]\u00a0 Both the Ford and the Hupmobile[9] would have been inexpensive cars.<br \/>\n<strong>Houston Light Guards, circa 1900[10]:<\/strong> The Light Guards formed in 1873 as an early militia group.\u00a0 Their original Romanesque armory was built at Texas Avenue and Fannin Street in 1893.\u00a0 It was sold in 1925 and the Light Guard built a new Art Deco home on Caroline Street[11].\u00a0 The second building[12] now houses the Buffalo Soldiers Museum[13].<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/light-guards.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1453 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/light-guards.jpg?w=268\" alt=\"Light Guards\" width=\"268\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/light-guards.jpg 489w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/light-guards-269x300.jpg 269w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 268px) 100vw, 268px\" \/><\/a><strong>Hermann Estate office and staff, circa 1910-1920[14]:<\/strong> We think this was at the Stewart Building office (1906-1973) at Fannin and Preston. According to the Bayou City History blog (2012 June 5), it was the first reinforced concrete building in the city[15].<br \/>\nThe clock above the rolltop desk advertises \u201cG.A. Pfeiffle[?] Watch Inspector, S.S.&amp;S. Ry, Greenville,Tex.\u201d This would have been the Sherman, Shreveport, and Southern Railway, which had its offices in Greenville and was sold to the MKT in 1901[16].\u00a0 Apparently the Estate staff frugally bought secondhand clocks.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/estate-office.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1454 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2014\/10\/estate-office.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"Estate office\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/estate-office.jpg 797w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/estate-office-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2014\/10\/estate-office-768x528.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong>McKinney between Main and Travis, circa 1920[17]:<\/strong> The church at left is the 1896 Romanesque home of the First Presbyterian Church. This building burned in 1932[18]. The building that housed it was demolished and replaced in 1904 by a new office building[21].
