\/>\nI&#8217;ve noted several times that mystery objects are a common part of our jobs (there wouldn&#8217;t be Thingamjigs without them!).<br \/>\nLast week, our couriers arrived bright and early in but no matter.\u00a0 Philip Montgomery, our archivist, was out of town and I thought whoever had donated it had probably notified him instead.\u00a0 Anyway, it wasn&#8217;t ticking or anything, so I put it in his office.<br \/>\nIt seems I was wrong, because Phil came in on Monday, looked at it, and said, &#8220;What is <em>that<\/em>?&#8221;<br \/>\nSo we opened it:<br \/>\n<figure id=\"caption-attachment-701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Surprise!<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nIt&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Resuscitator\">resuscitator<\/a>[1].\u00a0 Resuscitators are used to keep unconscious people who are not breathing on their own, oxygenated.<br \/>\nThis one appears to be a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mdsr.ecri.org\/summary\/detail.aspx?doc_id=8123\">gas- (oxygen-)powered<\/a>[2] variety, which means that it uses positive pressure supplied by the oxygen tank to supply the patient.\u00a0 This is basically the same principle used by the anesthesia machines at my former job in a veterinary hospital, except that the anesthesia machines allowed the patient to breathe vaporized anesthetic along with the oxygen.\u00a0 They also, though, were driven by pressurized oxygen tanks.<br \/>\nThe black rubber bag&#8211;alas, this one has aged and begun to &#8220;melt&#8221;&#8211;is the air chamber or, well, bag[3]:<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_703\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-703\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-703\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Air bag<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nWhen you&#8217;re watching &#8220;ER&#8221; and they start hollering about &#8220;bagging&#8221; a patient, this is what they mean&#8211;reviving somebody with a resuscitator (which has a &#8220;bag&#8221;).\u00a0 The bag, from which the patient inhales, fills with oxygen from the tank while the patient is exhaling, allowing a new breath to be administered immediately and the oxygen level delivered to be almost 100%.<br \/>\nHere are the masks, one large and one small.\u00a0 The brown rubber is the padding that protects the patient&#8217;s face.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_704\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-704\" style=\"width: 300px\" id=\"caption-attachment-704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Masks<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThis resuscitator was made by a company called Surviv-A-Life.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t find out much about them except that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trademarkia.com\/survivalife-73075169.html\">trademark<\/a>[4] was registered in 1976 and canceled in 2002.\u00a0 This is a model 9042 and the tag on it says it was filled in 1976.\u00a0 Many of the pieces are still sealed in plastic, so it appears never to have been used.\u00a0 I hope we can be glad it wasn&#8217;t needed?<br \/>\nThe Surviv-A-Life was donated by a Mr. Chris Broad, who tells us he got it from a Houston-area dive expert named Kenny Young.\u00a0 Mr. Broad also noted that it was taken on board <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cousteau.org\/\">Jacques Cousteau<\/a>&#8216;s[5] ship RV <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calypso_%28ship%29\"><em>Calypso<\/em><\/a>[6].<br \/>\n[1] <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Resuscitator\">Resuscitator<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Main_Page\">Wikipedia<\/a>.<br \/>\n[2] <a
