Hermann"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>by Alethea Drexler<\/strong>, <em>archives assistant<\/em><br \/>\n<a href=\"mailto:mcgovern@exch.library.tmc.edu\">mcgovern@exch.library.tmc.edu<\/a><br \/>\nPhil and I found a few boxes of photographs stashed within the Hermann Estate collection when I was looking for hospital-supply ephemera last week.\u00a0 I had not seen these when I re-boxed the collection five years ago because they didn&#8217;t contain any business papers.<br \/>\nOne box consists mostly of images of or relating to George H. Hermann, for whom the hospital and the park are named.<br \/>\nMr. Hermann, in a later portrait (probably circa 1910-1914):<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong>Click on the images for larger versions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:center;\">\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<dl class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/hermann-portrait-300dpi-1000.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-576\" title=\"Hermann portrait 300dpi 1000\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/hermann-portrait-300dpi-1000.jpg?w=210\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/hermann-portrait-300dpi-1000.jpg 700w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/hermann-portrait-300dpi-1000-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">George Henry Hermann<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">George Henry Hermann was born in Houston on August 6, 1843, in a house that stood near where City Hall stands today.\u00a0 He served in the Twenty-Sixth Cavalry during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.houstonhistory.com\/citizens\/houstonians\/history8i.htm\">Civil War<\/a>[1] and then returned to Houston to make a fortune in timber, cattle, real estate, and, most especially, oil.\u00a0 He passed away in 1914 and keeps illustrious company in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.glenwoodcemetery.org\/\">Glenwood Cemetery<\/a>[2][3], which is just off of Allen Parkway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Phil was told recently that Hermann&#8217;s father, John, was a Swiss veteran of the Battle of Waterloo (on the losing side).\u00a0 This page on <a href=\"http:\/\/texancultures.com\/publications\/texansoneandall\/swiss.htm\">Swiss Texans<\/a>[4] says that, too.\u00a0 I&#8217;d love to be able to find out more about the elder Hermann.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">In his later years, Hermann was plagued by failing health and traveled to the north and northeast in search of remedies.\u00a0 He spent some time at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Harvey_Kellogg\">John Harvey Kellogg<\/a>[5]&#8217;s (of cornflake fame) <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Battle_Creek_Sanitarium\">Battle Creek Sanitarium<\/a>[6] in 1911 and sent a postcard home to a friend:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_577\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-577\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/battle-creek-300dpi-1500-meld.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-577\" title=\"Battle Creek 300dpi 1500 meld\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/battle-creek-300dpi-1500-meld.jpg?w=239\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/battle-creek-300dpi-1500-meld.jpg 1199w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/battle-creek-300dpi-1500-meld-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/battle-creek-300dpi-1500-meld-768x961.jpg 768w, https:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/battle-creek-300dpi-1500-meld-819x1024.jpg 819w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Houston, Texas, guests of the Battle Creek Sanitarium, 1911<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">Hermann is in the back row, on our left.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">The aim of the Battle Creek Sanitarium was to restore patients&#8217; general health through a high-fiber, low-fat, diet; fresh air, and exercise.\u00a0 We would probably call it a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spa\">spa<\/a>&#8220;[7] today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:left;\">There were a few pictures of Hermann in the yard with a man and some little girls.\u00a0 The folder says &#8220;Hermann with May Ewing.&#8221;\u00a0 May seems to have been the smaller of the girls.\u00a0 The man holding her is probably T.J.
