Arnett (it even has his name engraved on it).\u00a0 It&#8217;s about seven inches long and made of metal (probably stainless steel), with a black rubber tip.\u00a0 It&#8217;s jointed twice so it can be opened up like a jackknife:<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_275\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-275\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/08\/arnett-mystery-device-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-275\" title=\"Arnett mystery device 2\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/mcgovern\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/08\/arnett-mystery-device-2.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The mystery device, opened<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe middle section is not a blade&#8211;it&#8217;s about 1\/8 of an inch thick and does not have a beveled or tapered edge.<br \/>\nSomeone suggested to us that it might be a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goniometer\">goniometer<\/a>, which, in a medical context, is used to measure range of motion in joints.\u00a0 However, as Dr. Arnett pointed out, a goniometer would have measurements on it, and this doesn&#8217;t have any measurements.\u00a0 The rubber tip suggested to HRC archivist Phil Montgomery that it might have been used to test reflexes.<br \/>\nIt has a maker&#8217;s mark of &#8220;Soningen, Germany&#8221;\u00a0 and an Abbott Laboratories logo, so it might have been a promotional item.\u00a0 Dr. Arnett tells us that he&#8217;s not sure what it is, either, which is a pity because it&#8217;s very nicely made and quite substantial.\u00a0 We just don&#8217;t know what it is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Alethea Drexler Archives assistant In the spirit of vintage Thingamajig, we present to you . . . something.
