Autrey.\u00a0 Luckily, the family provided an inventory of the items they donated, or I would never have figured out what these are!<br \/>\nThey are stored in a black, lacquered tagboard case, which looks very much like an old-fashioned eyeglasses case, except that it&#8217;s just over a foot long.\u00a0 (That&#8217;s an ordinary pair of household shears, for scale.)<\/p>\n<div>\n<dl>\n<dt><a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2010\/04\/bougie-case-2-750.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Bougie case 2 750\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2010\/04\/bougie-case-2-750.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Inside the carrying case.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>If you pull off the end, you will find a collection of slender . . . things.<\/p>\n<div>\n<dl>\n<dt><a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2010\/04\/bougies-750.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Bougies 750\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2010\/04\/bougies-750.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Long and slender<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>They are quite long and flexible.\u00a0 They are thicker through the middle and taper to fine threads at both ends, and have small bulbous tips.<\/p>\n<div>\n<dl>\n<dt><a href=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2010\/04\/bougie-ends-750.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Bougie ends 750\" src=\"http:\/\/library.tmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/mcgmedia\/2010\/04\/bougie-ends-750.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd>Tapering, with bulbous ends.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>You can see the tapering and the bulbs better in this close-up.<br \/>\nThese are made of a material that once had many uses, but now has essentially none, since we have plastics and nylon to replace it.<br \/>\nPost your answers in the comment field below, or email them to <a title=\"mcgovern@exch.library.tmc.edu\" href=\"mcgovern@exch.library.tmc.edu\">mcgovern@exch.library.tmc.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Alethea Drexler \u00a0Archives Assistant A request was made this past weekend that the Thingamajig feature be posted on the blog&#8217;s main page so that it could be tagged and archived, instead of being replaced completely every week.\u00a0 So . . . here it is!
