Descriptions: In 2003, a nonprofit scientific and medical publishing venture was launched that provides scientists and physicians with high-quality, high-profile journals in which to publish their most important work. Under the open access model, authors bear the cost of publication and PLoS journal articles are immediately available online, with no charge for access on the reader's part, and no restrictions on subsequent redistribution or use, except that that the author and work must be cited as specified under the conditions of the work's Creative Commons Attribution License. PLOS publishes a suite of journals accessible here, and also presents an interesting and wide selection of  "Collections" of published articles grouped by topic.

Descriptions: F1000Research is an open online journal based on an alternative model of scientific publishing and peer review. Peer review is open, attributed, and done post-publication, once a work has been submitted to internal review and posted. F1000 strongly encourages publication of accompanying datasets under liberal Creative Commons licensing terms. Citations contain information on the stage of refereeing and approval of references. Many Texas Medical Center faculty members are also on the distinguished international editorial staff at F1000.

Descriptions: This digital repository provides open access to e-prints in physics, mathematics, non-linear science, computer science, and quantitative biology. Started in August 1991, arXiv.org (formerly xxx.lanl.gov) is a highly-automated electronic archive and distribution server for research papers. Users can retrieve papers from arXiv either via the web interface, or by sending commands to the system via e-mail. Authors can use a web form to submit their papers and can also update their submissions if they choose, though previous versions remain available. Users can register to automatically receive an email listing of newly submitted papers in areas of interest to them.
