Awards

  1. Sandra Yvette Desjardins and Bronwyn Sutherland were awarded the SCC/MLA William D. Postell, Sr. Professional Development Award to pursue the MLA Systematic Review Services Specialization Level I.
  2. Joanne Romano, MLS, Head of Resource Management and Discovery Services was a recipient of the 2023 Medical Library Association (MLA ) Grant and Scholarship Award. Joanne used her grant to attend the Electronic Resources and Libraries (ER&L) 2023 conference, where she presented: “All in this Together: Team collaboration improves services, expands outreach and demonstrates value at the Texas Medical Center Library”.

  4. Joanne Romano and Chad Metz were invited as speakers for the Amigos 2024 virtual conference on February 14th. They presented a 45 minute session entitled: Success in Tech Services: the Collaborative Solution.
  5. Alice Sherwood delivered a presentation of How to Showcase and Preserve the History of a Medical Library using The TMC Library's Digital Commons Exhibits at the Medical Institutional Repositories in Libraries Symposium 2023 (MIRL23).
  6. Chad Metz was invited to present at the Ex Libris Southcentral Group (ELSUG) virtual conference, on November 3, 2023. With MDA colleague, Valerie Felan, Chad presented: Sowing the Seeds for Success, in which he shared best practices for early career librarians learning the ALMA/Primo system as part of their new role in librarianship. Attendees gained tips for success as early career librarians.
  7. Isaac J. Chamani, Lauren L. Taylor, Timothy Dunn, Anna Claire Reynolds, Beatriz Varman, Karin Anneliese Fox and Laura Detti presented the abstract of Preimplantation Genetic Testing and Placental Abnormalities: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis, Fertility and Sterility at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine Congress, October 2023.
  8. Ann Connolly, Director of Product, Digital Commons, Elsevier, Alice Sherwood and Courtenay Mcleland of University of North Florida delivered a presentation of Out of the Archive and into the Spotlight: Telling the Story of Your Institution Through Digital Exhibits at the Digital Commons North American Conference 2023 in Miami, Florida.
  9. Katie Prentice and Emme Lopez, of Texas A&M, presented the poster: Get Hired: Tips and Practices to Make Your Application Shine at the 2023 Joint Chapter Meeting : SCC & SC (New Orleans, LA) conference.
  10. Sandra Yvette Desjardins, Katie Pierce-Farrier, Brandon Kennedy, and Caraline Annichiarico delivered a paper presentation of Learning on the Job! A Webinar Series for Early Career Librarians by Early Career Librarians at the 2023 Joint Chapter Meeting : SCC & SC (New Orleans, LA) conference. This paper recapped the group's experiences as they collaborated to create a webinar series for the Early Career Librarians Initiative (ECLI).
  11. Sandra Yvette Desjardins and Laura Haygood held a panel discussion on behalf of the Early Career Librarian Initiative (ECLI) at the 2023 Joint Chapter Meeting : SCC & SC (New Orleans, LA) conference on September 25, 2023, to give members a space to share their experiences as ECLI members.
  12. Sandra Yvette Desjardins, Kelly Williams, Michelle Shea, Margaret Dawson, and Victoria Eastes presented a discussion entitled Stop Fanning the Flames of Burnout: Causes of and Solutions to Burnout to the Texas A&M University System: Virtual Library Conference in June 2023.
  13. Matt Richardson delivered a lightning talk at the 2023 Texas Conference on Digital Libraries in Austin entitled: AtoM-izing Archival Collections. This presentation walked through the MHC’s workflow for creating archival description, importing it into the archives management system (AtoM), and making it available online.
  14. Matt Richardson presented a talk at the Librarians, Archivists, and Museum Professionals in the History of Health Sciences 2023 Annual Meeting entitled: Focusing on Institutional Audiovisual Resources from the Texas Medical Center. Matt presented virtually during the hybrid meeting, which was held in Ann Arbor, MI.
  15. Katie Prentice presented Completing a Major Library Renovation in a Global Pandemic at the Medical Library Association & Special Libraries Association ’23 Joint Meeting in Detroit, Michigan, May 19, 2023.
  16. Sandra Yates chaired the educational session, Community Archiving Workshop and Audiovisual Collections Care in Tribal Archives, at the Society of Southwest Archivists 2023 Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
  17. Matt Richardson led the Texas Archival Resources Online (TARO) Brown Bag at the Society of Southwest Archivists 2023 Annual Meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
  18. Katie Prentice presented in the webinar Want to Be a Medical Librarian? How to Land Your First Job! an event provided by the SCC/MLA Early Career Librarians Initiative, hosted by the Network of the National Library of Medicine Region 3, January 27, 2023.

  22. Alice Sherwood presented a lightning talk, entitled: Bringing Open Access Peer-Reviewed Journals to the Community and Beyond: Using DigitalCommons@TMC As Example at Digital Commons North American Conference 2022.
  23. Katie Prentice delivered a paper at the SCCMLA 2022 Houston conference entitled: Finding Space to Complete Major Renovations. This papers shares the adventures and successes of a major library renovation, completed during the Covid-19 pandemic.
  24. Amy Sisson delivered a paper at the SCCMLA 2022 Houston conference entitled: Too Many Cooks Make an Excellent Broth: A Comparative Analysis of Five Independently Developed Search Strategies on the Same Topic. This paper sought to compare and analyze the respective literature search
    strategies and results from several librarians working independently on the same topic.
  25. Sandra Yates, Matt Richardson, Kelly Caldwell, and Javier Garza facilitated a roundtable discussion at the SCCMLA 2022 Houston conference entitled “It’s Mutual: Challenges and Opportunities Working with Medical Archives and Special Collections”
  26. Sandra Yates presented a poster at the at the SCCMLA 2022 Houston conference, We Have Your Records II: Using & Contributing to the Archives of the South Central Chapter.
  27. Joanne Romano, Beatriz Varman, Amy Sisson & Kelsey Koym delivered a paper at the SCCMLA 2022 Houston conference entitled: All in This Together: Team Collaboration Improves Services, Expands Outreach, and Demonstrates Value at the Texas Medical Center Library. This paper demonstrates how collaboration between reference and resource management librarians can enhance customer service, outreach and value at the Texas Medical Center Library.
  28. Joanne Romano delivered a Lightning Talk at the SCC MLA 2022 Houston conference entitled: Where’d you say you were from? Publishers’ extra steps to full text. This two-minute talk exposed the extra identity layers some publishers are adding to their websites, making the user experience for full text access less than optimal.
  29. Alice Sherwood delivered a Lightning Talk at the SCC MLA 2022 Houston conference entitled: Tracking & Presenting Your Library Website Usage: Google Analytics 4 and Google Dashboard This two-minute talk discusses how implementing Google Analytics 4 and Google Data Studio helps improving library web traffic to help enhance user experience.https://dc.researchcommons.org/dcnoamconf/2022/nov10/5

  1. Celeste Perez got accepted to attend NLM's 9-week course Fundamentals of Health Sciences Research Data Management to be held from February 12, 2024 ~ April 12, 2024.
  2. SCAMeL Librarian Exchange Professional Development Program awarded $6000.00 in February 2024 for librarian exchange with Brook Amen, Associate Director, Gibson D. Lewis Library, UNT Health Science Center and Sandra Yvette Desjardins, Liaison Librarian, Texas Medical Center Library.
  3. Kelsey Koym got accepted to the NLM Library Carpentry Virtual Workshop to be held on November 7-8th from 9 am-4 pm
  4. Celeste Perez won a scholarship to attend the virtual Open Education Conference on November 7-9th from 9 am-5 pm
  5. In fiscal year 2023, Resource Management Associate, Jasmin Legaspi, updated 7,900 Docline holdings for accuracy.  She also deleted approximately 1,200 titles from Ebsco databases that are no longer offered by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.   Publisher coverage dates and content offerings can change over time, so Jasmin diligently manages our Docline holdings as a regular project and on an as-needed basis.
  6. Sandra Yates and Matt Richardson were awarded SCAMeL Speedy Startup funding for the project “Texas Medical Center Historical Audiovisual Resources Digitization” 2022.
