Descriptions: The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) is a suite of healthcare databases and related software tools developed through a Federal-State-Industry partnership to build a multi-state system of healthcare databases supportive of research and decision-making. HCUP databases contain a core set of clinical and non-clinical information found in a typical patient discharge abstract: listed diagnoses and procedures, status at time of discharge, patient demographics, and charges regardless of payer (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, or uninsured.)
